Asan Medical Center, setting a milestone in Korea’s medical history with countless achievements…
The miracle began in June 1989, at the turn of the season.

The historical moment when the wish was finally realized for the late Chairman Mr. CHU NG Ju-yung of the Hyundai Group who led Korea’s economic growth!

At the time, it was a very big building.
I would pass by Asan Medical Center imagining myself working in that place one day

It was next to fields and paddies. So I was worried whether the hospital would do well.

Our first step was taken with both hopes and worries

Outstanding doctors such as the late President Mun Ho Lee and President Byung Chul Min came to AMC from all over as well as outside Korea.

When our hospital opened, many devoted doctors who strived to build this new institute comparable to the established university hospitals came to us…

I was thrilled to work with such great doctors. I was going to devote myself to this hospital.

The first goal for Asan Medical Center was to define a model to establish its unique identity.

Even at a cost, we were determined to maintain and push forward with our “patient -centeredness”.

Patient-centered care will lead us to become a friendly and most admired hospital.

The unique steps AMC took brought a refreshing wave to Korea’s medical sector and changed its medical culture.

It has also constantly led changes to meet the patients’ increasing expectations and satisfaction.

The West Building could no longer accommodate all the patients as the floating population exceeded 10,000 a day.

The opening of the East Building in 1994 embarked a new era of center-oriented ultra-specialization with 2,177 beds, the largest in Korea.

Not only did this improve its operation system but AMC also built a collaborative multidisciplinary treatment system where a team of experts in different areas provided highly professional and comprehensive treatment.

In 2008, the New Building was erected to adapt to the changing times. The keyword was “healing”.

I’m so happy to have such a great and spacious workplace.

Outpatient clinics will offer a more comfortable environment, waiting periods for tests will become shorter, and children who are our future will receive treatment in a much better setting.

The West Building where AMC was founded is now the Asan Cancer Center, where a more comprehensive cure for cancer is being researched.

Thanks to AMC’s founding principle focused on patients, it is evolving into a medical town that reaches far beyond the hospital buildings.

What motivates us to move forward with a global competitiveness…

Turning crisis into opportunity,

Flood damage (September 11, 1990)

Rain poured for many days and flooded our hospital. They said it would take us a year to restore the hospital.

I remember it was less than a month before our hospital was restored and we began seeing patients again. There I realized our hospital’s great potential, how it will achieve great things.

We were flooded

But we did not sink.

Ever since it turned crisis into opportunity, AMC has earned the epithet “First in Korea” and “First in the world”.
In particular, AMC was a pioneer in the barren area of organ transplant, maintaining the highest success rates in the world in every area.

We accepted many patients who were unable to receive organ transplant at other hospitals.
We consider ourselves to be more than a tertiary care center. With our own sense of responsibility that we may be their last chance.

We strive to provide best quality care. And we feel that this is how we became a world-class leader in the field.

Countless results that top medical staff and employees in each field have achieved at AMC!

A challenging spirit and a compassionate heart have created miracles and helped AMC advance.

Since the opening of the ASAN Institute for Life Sciences in 1990, AMC has been committed to medicine and life science research.

There are three types of researches that are conducted at the ASAN Institute for Life Sciences, namely basic, translational, and clinical research. The founding purpose of the Institute is to devote to these three types of research to increase our future research capability and to develop ASAN Institute for Life Sciences into a world-class institute.

Endless support with the state-of-the-art medical and research equipment increases opportunity and motivation for research staff to harness their skills.

Based on these achievements and investments, the year 2014 is the time for us to take another leap into the next 25 years!
